ACO 2023: Musician Highlights

What our musicians are most looking forward to in the ACO 2023 Season.

We asked some of our Musicians what they are most looking forward to in 2023.

There's sparkling Chopin and thrilling Vivaldi, with discoveries in electronic film music and music by Australian composers along the way... here's their verdict on what not to miss.

Richard Tognetti, Artistic Director

“In 2023 the ACO will celebrate in the joy of collaborating with extraordinary musicians from across the globe. This includes a national tour with Will Gregory, one-half of UK electronic music duo Goldfrapp, for a concert that delves into the music of Wendy Carlos and Delia Derbyshire – two composers whose astounding capacity for experimentation and invention paved the way for the most revered film scores of the last 50 years.

“The tours I fall in love with most always seem to be the chamber music tours, so I’m looking forward to ‘Postcards from Italy’ next year. I adore the intimacy and intensity that comes with performing these programs, and as a violist I get to sit right in the middle of this soundworld – without doubt, the best seat in the house!”

“I can’t wait to have Ilya Gringolts back with the ACO in February. He’s one of those rare musicians who leaves the jaws of the audience and his fellow performers resting on the floor at the end of a concert - truly a master.”

“In 2023 I'm excited to get back to my ACO roots: going on the road with ACO Collective. Regional touring is always a highlight for me – and with the lovely Matthew Truscott guest directing a piece by the inimitable Holly Harrison on the program, with a full complement of 17 string players, it’s sure to be an exhilarating ride.”

“2023 will be the year we reconnect with the musical world beyond our shores - welcoming back old friends Ilya Gringolts and Polina Leschenko from distant lands, returning to Japan and North America for the first time since 2018 and 2019, all of which are sources of great inspiration to perform even better on our stages at home.”

“We have a cracking season ahead of us, but the concerts I'm most looking forward to are our Relaxed Performances at our new home at Pier 2/3. The Relaxed Performances are tailored to patrons with access needs. These 50-minute events welcome people on the autism spectrum, people that might have sensory sensitivities, and people with disability, as well as parents and carers with babies in an informal, daytime experience. Come along, respond to the music, make noise, be yourself, and have fun!”

“I am really looking forward to our Mozart Symphonies program. It has been so long since we were able to welcome a full section of wind players into our orchestra because of COVID and this program is special because we are bringing the best period wind players from around the world!”
