Setwun and the Soulstranauts

Sydney Festival: Setwun & The Soulstranauts Play Roy Ayers

Sydney Festival presents Setwun & The Soulstranauts at ACO On The Pier, as part of its 2025 program.
“Setwun is making some serious waves with his fusion of dance and soul.” – The Music

Ode to Inspiration joins the dots between the trailblazers who opened doors – and tomorrow’s new radicals walking through them. Setwun & The Soulstranauts reimagine the music of legendary soul-jazz composer Roy Ayers, breathing new life (and new twists) into his classic repertoire.

Setwun aka Josh Panakera-Molony is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and DJ. Instinctively soulful, he weaves together contemporary jazz, beats and electronica with permeable feeling. Whether it’s psychedelic neo-soul, off-kilter broken grooves or wobbly experimentation, Setwun makes affecting music, no matter the direction.

Setwun & The Soulstranauts pay tribute to Ayers, a prophet of acid jazz and the “godfather of neo-soul”. The vibraphonist and composer is one of the most sampled artists of all time, responsible for classics from A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu and Kendrick Lamar. His slew of 70s albums with tracks like “Searching”, “Running Away” and “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” have inspired generations.

Don’t miss this celebration of an immense legacy from a fast-rising talent.
