Amaro Freitas

Sydney Festival: Amaro Freitas

Sydney Festival presents a rising star of Afro-Brazilian jazz, in this breathtaking percussion and rhythmic exploration of the ancient philosophies and inspirational stories of Black Brazil.

“A totally gripping, vibrant and original synthesis of jazz and Brazilian music.” – The Wire

From the slums of Recife in north-eastern Brazil to an international jazz icon, Amaro Freitas has worked tirelessly to become the artist he is today. A precociously gifted player who honed his skills on an imaginary keyboard, he worked his way up through the jazz clubs as a teenager before forming the Amaro Freitas Trio with bassist Jean Elton and drummer Hugo Medeiros.

His debut album, Sangue Negro (2016), took the country by storm with its stunning fusion of afrojazz, samba, bebop and frevo, while Rasif (2018) and Sankofa (2021) drew breathless acclaim from critics. Next March, he’s set to release his first solo album Y'Y.

Freitas was selected for the prestigious Montreux Jazz Academy in 2019, collaborated with Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento, and stunned audiences world-wide with his complex, hypnotically rhythmic performances. Don’t miss this chance to experience this thrilling jazz artist as he makes his long-awaited Australian debut.
