ACO Up Close: Nicolas Altstaedt Solo
28 June 2024
Performance Info
This performance takes place at ACO Pier 2/3 in Sydney and Melbourne Recital Centre in Melbourne.
Beethoven’s music encompasses the full spectrum of human emotion. From the intimacy of his chamber music to the epic grandeur of his symphonies, audiences feel a deep connection to this universal artist.
Beethoven Arranged, curated by ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve, showcases two beloved works anew in arrangements from Beethoven’s own lifetime.
The playful and dramatic Second Symphony is laid bare in Beethoven’s own genius arrangement which makes the symphony sound as though it started out as a captivating piano trio, rather than the other way round. In the hands of pianist Aura Go, recently praised for her ‘eloquence and energy’ by The Age, ACO Principal Violin Helena Rathbone and ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko ‘Tipi’ Valve, audiences will experience the symphony’s richness and invention like never before.
Scaling up, Beethoven’s revolutionary and exuberant Cello Sonata in F major was re-cast for string quintet by his right-hand man Ferdinand Ries. After living and breathing Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas for two decades, Tipi now has the opportunity to share this beloved music with his ACO colleagues. In a small chamber group, the chemistry and connection within the ACO comes to the fore, resulting in a special experience for audiences and performers alike.
This concert also celebrates the recent release of two new albums on ABC Classic: Beethoven’s Symphonies 1, 2 and 3 ‘Eroica’, performed by the ACO and Richard Tognetti; and Beethoven Cello Sonatas, performed by ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve and pianist Aura Go.
