Still Life, 1662–1681, by Johann Friedrich Grueber

Art Masterpieces Celebrating the Beautiful Cello

The cello has been revered as a subject of beauty, emotion and virtuosity by artists for centuries. We celebrate pieces by artists from Cornelis Schut to Egon Schiele who have celebrated the instrument in their work.

Many masterpieces in art feature musical instruments, and particularly striking are members of the string family: the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass, all which you see on stage at an Australian Chamber Orchestra concert.

Our next National Concert, Altstaedt plays Haydn & Tchaikovsky, features renowned German French cellist making his ACO debut, including directing the Orchestra for the first time.

To herald Nicolas's arrival with sublime Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Veress and more, we feature some of the most beautiful masterworks celebrating Nicolas's instrument, the cello.
